Public meeting on Do Not Attempt Resussitation Orders (DNAR)

The Irish Hospice Foundation, a member of the Older & Bolder alliance, is holding a public meeting on Do Not Attempt Resuscitation (DNAR) Orders next Wednesday (6th June) at 6pm in the Alexander Hotel in Dublin. All are welcome to this free lecture.

Confirmed speakers are:
• Dr Deirdre Madden, Senior lecturer in law at University College Cork (UCC) and Chair of the National Consent Advisory Group;
• Dr. Siobhan O' Sullivan, the Chief Bioethics Officer at the Department of Health and Chair of the DNAR sub-group of the National Consent Advisory Group
• Dr Patrick Plunkett who is the Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine at Trinity College Dublin; Clinical Director, Emergency Directorate at St James' Hospital, Dublin and Commissioner at St John Ambulance Brigade of Ireland.

DNAR orders are currently part of a national consultation process on consent organised by the Health Service Executive until June 28th.  In everyday health and social care practice, circumstances arise which may challenge frontline staff in seeking informed consent from service users. There are a number of local and regional policies and guidelines in place but no single national Consent policy and supporting documentation on this issue. This draft Policy aims to provide guidance to service providers regarding how to obtain a valid and genuine consent in health and social care and also to provide guidance to service users regarding the provision or refusal of consent by them as partners in their own care.  The draft policy covers the issues that arise in the context of DNAR orders.
