85% of all adults want to live in their own homes when they are growing older [25/11/11]

Ipsos MRBI Poll reveals:

‘85% of all adults want to live in their own homes when they are growing older’

The director of Older & Bolder Patricia Conboy said today that the poll results (please see below) confirm that the majority of adults of all ages would prefer to age in their own homes. Ms Conboy said, “As Older & Bolder prepares for its national year-long campaign, ‘Make Home Work – the Right to Age Well at Home’ I am heartened by this poll result : people are clearly showing an awareness of  the value of a wide range of community services which would support them to age well at home. What is important now is that we ensure that community services are protected and developed. We need now to transform how we talk about older people’s wellbeing to include discussion about community-residing older people and supporting those who want to remain at home to do so.”

Ipsos MRBI POLL:

Ideal Place to Grow Old

  • The vast majority of Irish adults (85%) would like to live in their own home when growing older.
  • Those aged 45+ years are most likely to want to grow old in their own home (93%).
  • Interestingly, those aged 15-24 years are most likely to want to grow old in the ‘Home of a family member’ (16%) or ‘In a flat/apartment attached to the home of a family member’ (10%).

Support Needed When Growing Old at Home

A ‘Secure state pension’, ‘Access to public transport’ and a ‘Medical card’ were deemed as being required to age well at home by in excess of 80% of respondents

This research was conducted using OmniPoll, Ipsos MRBI's telephone omnibus, amongst a nationally representative sample of Irish adults aged 15+. The sample is quota controlled using the latest CSO estimates and is stratified to include listed, unlisted and mobile phone numbers to ensure all segments of the population are included.
