Older People relieved at no further cuts to State Pension [09/12/09]

Older & Bolder, an alliance of seven of the country’s leading organisations that champion older people’s rights in Ireland, has today (Wednesday, 9 December) said that the country’s older people will feel relieved that there have been no further cuts to the State Pension.  Welcoming the Government’s decision to leave the State Pension almost intact – apart from the 2% cut due to the suspension of the Christmas Bonus – Older & Bolder’s Project Director, Patricia Conboy, said that this decision was due to the active campaigning by thousands of older people around the country.

Research report shows older people 'financially stretched' by the recession [25/11/09]

New research released today (Wednesday, 25th November) illustrates the effects of the recession on older people’s quality of life.  Coping mechanisms include: heating and living in one room in the house; shopping for discounted and cheaper food and fuel products; avoiding purchase of new clothes and furnishings; and minimising use of their cars.  The qualitative research report, Feeling the Pinch was prepared by Elizabeth Costello and Stephen O’Hare and commissioned by Older & Bolder, an alliance of seven of the country’s leading age NGOs.

Older & Bolder, an alliance of seven of the country’s leading organisations representing and working with older people, has today (Tuesday, 27 October) said that older people are experiencing a deep sense of worry and insecurity about the future of the Old Age Pension and other supports and services.  The alliance’s claim is based on the feedback from eight consultation meetings held by Older & Bolder in Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Sligo, Waterford, Tralee, Trim, Tullamore and Wexford between November 2008 and June 2009.
 

Cutting supports for older people is incompatible with Government's commitment to positive ageing [21/10/09]

The Older and Bolder campaign has today (Friday, 17 July) warned that many of the recommendations of An Bord Snip Nua would, if implemented, have a pernicious effect on the quality of life of older people.

The Older and Bolder campaign has today (Thursday, 16 July) stated that any cuts to the State pension would be indefensible.  The campaign was responding to suggestions that the An Bord Snip Nua report is to recommend the inclusion of the State pension in the cuts of €1.5 billion from the social welfare budget.

The Older and Bolder campaign has today (Sunday, 5 April) urged the Government to ensure that the needs of vulnerable older people are protected in next Tuesday's Mini Budget.  The campaign was responding to persistent calls by some employers' groups and economists to cut social welfare by as much as 3% in the Mini Budget.
